Bryan Bell will present “Design for the 21st Century” on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center (corner of Palmetto and Vine Streets). The public is invited to attend the lecture, a reception, and book-signing following the lecture in the foyer of the Fine Arts Center—all free of charge.
Bell is an architect, author, community leader, and design activist. For more than twenty years he has worked with students, young people, and design professionals to develop affordable housing and design projects for local communities.
He is the founder and director of the non-profit design organization, Design Corps, with the mission “to create positive change in communities through design.” He is the editor of Good Deeds, Good Design: Community Service Through Architecture and the co-editor of Expanding Architecture: Design as Activism, a collection of essays by community leaders and design professionals.
In keeping with Design Corps’ motto, “good design should be accessible to all,” Bell encourages young graduates and design professionals to take on the role of “design activist” in response to the planning and design needs of a particular community. His message to students is to “become activists, engaging in action for the public good.”
The lecture is sponsored by the UTC Department of Interior Design and is funded through the generous support of The UTC Speakers and Special Events Committee and The Student Government Association.
