Students expressed their appreciation for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan by collecting items for care packages to send overseas.
Matthew Kimsey, senior history major, said he got the idea when his brother was called back to active duty.
“It’s something we need to do more often,” said Kimsey.
In March, members of the ROTC, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, and the Women’s Center, collected items including toiletries, puzzles, cards, and snacks. The UTC Bookstore donated dozens of calendars and the Residence Hall Association volunteered to pay for shipping the care packages. Students gathered to assemble the packages and plan to ship them soon.
“I just contacted everyone and said let’s come together as a community and do this,” Kimsey said.
ROTC members said receiving care packages from home helps boost morale for soldiers serving in harsh conditions.
