More than 500 students helped The American Cancer Society raise $9,000 during the first annual Relay For Life held at UTC.
“Through their hard work in preparing for the event, and by spending hours walking for the cause, UTC students certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” said Sarah Marczynski, UTC student and volunteer co-chair for Relay For Life.
Twenty-two teams participated in this year’s Relay event. The teams were comprised of campus organizations, dorms, academic departments and groups of friends. The top fundraising team was UTC University Honors (UHON), which raised $1,585.
“More than 1,600 people in Chattanooga alone will face a cancer diagnosis this year. And, it’s critical that we come together during Relay to help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back,” said Marczynski.
A Relay Wrap-Up Party is planned for Monday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room on the 3rd floor of the UC.
“Anyone who is interested in getting involved with Relay for the 2010-2011 school year is invited to attend and learn more,” said Lauren Davenport, development representative, American Cancer Society.
