The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is one of the Top 10 public universities in the country for merit-based financial aid to out-of-state students, according to U.S. News and World Report.
The report showed UTC offered merit-based aid to about 80 percent of its out-of-state students, giving an average of $6,465 to each student.
In the U.S. News and World Report study, 171 ranked public universities provided data on their aid to out-of-state students. On average, about one-third of out-of-state students received merit aid among the institutions that provided data, the magazine said.
Among the 10 public universities that provided the most out-of-state students merit aid in fall 2018, Bowling Green State University in Ohio tops the list at 90 percent. The average proportion among the schools on this list was 81 percent, according to U.S. News data.
“Many public research universities have dramatically increased nonresident enrollment … and adopted financial aid policies that specifically target nonresident students with modest academic achievement,” says the Joyce Foundation, which focuses on research in racial equity and economic mobility for the next generation. As part of its focus, the foundation gives grants to academic and research institutions.

It’s important to note that any out-of-state student who pursues a four-year honors experience at UTC, whether transferring in from another honors program or college to ours, or starting and finishing a four-year honors experience entirely at UTC, will have their out-of-state tuition WAIVED.
