Historical Chattanooga post cards, many from the early 1900s, are on display in the Lupton Library. They include post cards of sites on Lookout Mountain including Umbrella Rock, Point Park, the Cravens House, the Incline, and other photos of downtown Chattanooga, and a rare color representation of the original university building, Old Main.
The historic post card exhibit runs through the summer and is located on the 2nd floor of the library. Hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. -4:30 p.m.
The Special Collections of Lupton Library is also acquiring an important rare book collection.
“It’s the private collection of Dr. Charles Hubbard, a history professor at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. So far we have received first editions of Gone With the Wind, and Uncle Tom’s Cabin, as well as rare and valuable books dating back to the 1500s, including many beautifully bound volumes,” said Steve Cox, associate professor Special Collections and university archivist.
There are nearly 20 rare fore-edge paintings (books with hidden images painted on the fore-edge of the book). The collection also includes first editions of works by Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, and Joel Chandler Harris.
The rare book collection, which will be available this fall, will be housed in the Special Collections and will be available for patrons to use in-house.
