Edwin Murillo at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is a member of the group of Hispanic educators to serve on the second Leadership Academy/La Academia de Liderazgo, created by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).
The Leadership Academy is designed to increase the number of educators who want to serve in leadership position at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and emerging ones.
Assistant professor of Spanish, Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, Murillo’s one-year fellowship includes three seminars, the first on Oct. 20 and in conjunction with the 34th annual conference of HACU, titled “Fostering Excellence and Social Justice.”
The second seminar in April 2021 at HACU’s 26th annual Capitol Forum on Hispanic higher education. The third seminar is planned for late spring or early summer 2021 with a focus on international collaborations.
Faculty at the seminars include current and former presidents and senior-level administrators from HSIs. Mentorship with a university president is a major element in the seminars. In addition, a special project will be designed to have an impact at the educators’ home institution.
Along with UTC, some of the colleges and universities in the HACU program are Texas A&M University, University of Michigan, DePaul University, University of Illinois at Chicago and Indiana University.
Founded in 1986, HACU represents more than 500 colleges and universities across the U.S., and is the only national organization that represents current and emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions.
