The winner of an annual technology award has thanked a team from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for being an integral part of its success.
Hayden Data Systems’ Safe Power Networks was selected as the recipient of the Early Innovator Award from the Chattanooga Technology Excellence Awards, or TechX.
The awards, presented by the Chattanooga Technology Council, recognize individuals and regional companies for outstanding involvement, achievements and accomplishments, according to the organization.
Hayden Data and a team from the Department of Electrical Engineering have been collaborating to update the company’s Safe Power Networks.
“Without this relationship, we would have never been in a position to win this award,” said Hayden founder and Chief Technology Officer Iain Puddy.
The UTC team members are Associate Professor Donald Reising, UC Foundation Associate Professor Daniel Loveless, Professor Abdelraham Karrar and graduate research assistant Mohamed Alfatih Taha.
The UTC team provided assistance on an infrared camera system, a wireless transformer, a heater for using the system cold climates and alternate energy sources to recharge onboard batteries, explained Reising, who led the UTC team.
One of the key pieces in the research work was applying for a RevV! grant from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
“The RevV! program provides research & development capabilities—via university partnership—-to companies that lack that capability. The goal is to provide economical growth to Chattanooga, the Tennessee Valley and state overall,” Reising explained.
The collaboration between Hayden and UTC currently is being funded by the RevV! grant, but plans are to continue working together “through not only the existing grant, but also new ones we are applying for,” Puddy said.
The partnership still has plenty of research avenues to explore, Reising said.
“I can see this being just the beginning.”
