UTC Jazz Band to perform
The UTC Music Department is proud to present the UTC Jazz Band in “Funk, Latin and Swing” on Friday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the UTC Fine Arts Center Roland Hayes Hall. The concert is presented free of charge and is open to the general public.
Program highlights will showcase music performed by Michael Bublè, Tower of Power, Weather Report, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald, and the premier of an original composition by student composer John Rose entitled “Paper Airplanes.” In addition, the program will feature vocalist Courtney Reid and saxophonist Jon Elliott.
Dr. Erika Schafer is a founding member of New Dischord, a Chattanooga-based performing ensemble featuring new music in collaboration with other artists. She has also performed in the Chattanooga Jazz Festival and with the Chattanooga Bach Choir Orchestra. Highlights of her time at UTC include hosting Jeff Coffin, saxophonist with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and his group Mu’tet as guest artists as well as Thomas Hooten, principal trumpet of the Atlanta Symphony, and the performance of the UTC Trumpet Ensemble at the Trumpet Festival of the Southeast in 2010 at the University of Alabama.
UTC Percussion Ensemble Presents: Beat Hunger ‘10
Beat Hunger ’10 will be held Sunday and Monday, November 21 and 22. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. both nights at the UTC Roland Hayes Concert Hall, Fine Arts Center. Suggested donation is either a $2 donation or two non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Community Kitchen.
The annual Beat Hunger concert is directed by Dr. Monte Coulter and performed by the UTC Percussion Ensemble. The concert is also a benefit for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, and has become a traditional kickoff of the holiday giving season in Chattanooga. As an added treat, the Chattanooga-based drumming band “Funk-a-Buckets” will perform in the lobby before the Beat Hunger show. This quartet of expert drummers puts on a show that is part improvisation, part theater, and “always explosive and tight!”
The UTC Percussion Ensemble has established a reputation throughout the Southeast as a top-notch college percussion group, performing music on everything from traditional drums to African djembes, hand claps, and iron pipes and cymbals. Capacity audiences drawn to Beat Hunger shows have contributed thousands of pounds of food donations, and entertained thousands of audience members over the years.
UTC ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE
The UTC Mens Chorus, Roland Carter, Director and the UTC Women’s Chorale, Womens Chorale , Dr. Lee Harris, Director will perform Tuesday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center. Admission is free, no ticket required.
