This February, UTC will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of events including a poetry reading, panel discussion, and fellowship dinner.
Week 1: Back to Our Heritage
Tuesday, February 1 – Kick Off Celebration/“A Walk through UTC Black History” 5 p.m., Multicultural Center in the University Center, room 352, includes giveaways.
Friday, February 4 Sock Hop Dance, 7 p.m., the ARC
Saturday, February 5 UTK Black Issues Conference
A bus will leave Lansing Court at 7 a.m. to go to UTK and will return to UTC at 6 p.m. Currently, 30 spots are left. To register for a spot, call the Multicultural Center at (423) 425-5648. Bus ride and conference are free.
Saturday, February 5 Mocs Movie Night: “To Kill A Mockingbird,” 9 p.m., UC Foundation Activity Room in the UC Foundation (formerly 5000) Building
Week 2: Back to Awareness
Monday, February 7 National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Program, 11a.m., Tennessee Room in University Center. Free HIV Testing. Make a wax handprint and donate to Chattanooga Cares.
Tuesday, February 8 “Think Everybody Does It: SLAP Yourself”(Drug/Alcohol Awareness Program) 6 p.m. Multicultural Center in the University Center, room 352
Wednesday, February 9 Town Hall Meeting on the “State of the Black Student,” 6 p.m, Multicultural Center in University Center, room 352. Panelists include students, alumni, and staff.

Tuesday, February 15 Dr. Francoise Hamlin of Brown University will present an examination of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States through a close focus on Clarksdale, Mississippi called “‘I have not ended the story for there is no end’: Local Civil Rights Movements” from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the Raccoon Mountain Room of the University Center.
Wednesday, February 16 Diversity Dialog Series: “Why are all the Black Kids still sitting together in the cafeteria?” 6 p.m., Multicultural Center in University Center, room 352. Part of the Book Club Series–students can pick up copy of book for free at the Multicultural Center.
Thursday, February 17 Multicultural Center Black History Month Awards Show and Dance in University Center Auditorium, 8:30 p.m. The dance begins immediately following the awards program. Presenting the “Trail Blazers” award to students. Faculty, staff, and students can send in nominations. Form is available in the Multicultural Center in University Center, room 352.
