The UTC Jazz Band will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center (corner of Vine and Palmetto Streets). UTC Assistant Band Director Dr. Erika Schafer will lead this free concert, which is open to the public.
Schafer has chosen as a theme for this concert, “Back to Basie (and other Jazz Masters).”
Also on the program will be music of composers who worked closely with Basie including Frank Foster, Neal Hefti and Sammy Nestico. Additionally works of prominent jazz composers such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, W.C. Handy, and Charlie “Yardbird” Parker are featured. The program will utilize several soloists from the group and showcase the versatility of the ensemble as they perform in many jazz signature styles.
Schafer is UTC’s newly appointed Assistant Director of Bands and Trumpet Instructor. Prior to her position at UTC, she was a member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. where she was a featured soloist and also performed with several chamber ensembles including the Brass Quartet and the Joint Services Brass Quintet. She was an active performer in other groups in the D.C. area including the McLean Symphony Orchestra and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra among others. Schafer has previously taught at George Mason University and Catholic University, and she was the brass instructor at South County Secondary School and Edison High School, both in Virginia.
