The UTC Music Department will host the Goliard Ensemble, a New York-based chamber music ensemble, as part of their Southeastern Music Festival Tour. The Ensemble will offer a free public concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24 in the UTC Cadek Recital Hall, in addition to the masterclasses and demonstrations they will provide as part of their two-day residency at UTC.
The program for the Tuesday evening concert includes a variety of interesting works utilizing various combinations of the Ensemble members. The mezzo-soprano, alto saxophone, and piano will perform three of Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs. The saxophone, violin and cello will combine for Vaughan William’s Six Studies in English Folk Song. The piano, cello and violin will perform Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D Major, “Ghost.” The whole ensemble will close with an Elliot Levioff arrangement of “Cruda sorte” from Rossini’s opera L’Italiana in Algeri.
Perhaps the most interesting piece of the evening will be the Tennessee premiere of a Goliard Ensemble commission: Dorothy Hindman’s The Pillow Book, a set of songs on texts by Rebecca Lindenberg, with such intriguing titles as “Things that tourists are always snapping pictures of” and “Reasons one might want to leave New York.”
The Goliard Ensemble is an outreach program of the Goliard Concerts, Astoria, New York. Praised by the New York Times for its versatility and creativity in programming, the Goliard Concerts is a critically acclaimed arts organization performing a full concert season in Astoria as well as performing in parks and senior centers throughout the city. Goliard sponsors an annual composer-in-residence, from whom they commission at least one new work each season. This work is premiered in various venues throughout the southeastern US during an annual tour by the ensembles’ principal players to schools, universities, and traditional concert venues.
The residency of the Goliard Ensemble at UTC is funded by the UTC Speakers and Special Events and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Herbert Burhenn. Additional support comes from Sigma Alpha Iota Music fraternity (Theta Mu chapter), and for off-campus events, First-Centenary UMC and Girls Preparatory School.
