High school students from Boyd Buchanan and Hixson High School won first place awards in the UTC mathematics poster competition, open to all high school students from Hamilton County and surrounding areas of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. “Mathematics in the Sciences and Business” was the theme of the second annual contest. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee and the UTC Department of Math were cosponsors of this event.
Eighteen students from six local schools submitted posters. Students in grades 9 and 10 competed in the Junior Division while students in grades 11 and 12 competed in the Senior Division. Three winning posters were selected from each division.
The winners in the Junior Division were:
1st Place: Josh Leverette of Boyd-Buchanan School for his poster “Gravitational Acceleration”
2nd Place: Caitlyn Clifford of Notre Dame High School for her poster “Bridging the Math Gap”
3rd Place: Catie Casey of Notre Dame High School for her poster “The Vitruvian Man”
The winners in the Senior Division were:
1st Place: Kyle Marcum and Aaron Fisher of Hixson High School for their poster “Bombs Away!”
2nd Place: Justin Barr of Hixson High School for his poster “Maximizing Music”
3rd Place: James Nasca and Stephanie Raulston of Central High School for their poster “Luigi’s Pizza”
Each first place team received a prize of $200, while each second place team received $100 and each third place team $50. The mathematics department at the school of each first place winner also received a $50 award.
The judges for the competition were Dr. Edward Rozema (UTC Mathematics Department), Dr. Irene Loomis (UTC Mathematics Department), and Maria Knox (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee and UTC Math alumna).
