Adam Higgs, Vijay Patel, Hitesh Vashi, Marko Bajic, Jin Cheng, Sean Dunn, Cassie Brooks, Iliza Myers, Rishi Naik, Marie Loizeaux, Eric Tiner, and Scott Kindelberger have been awarded Grote Scholarships for 2007 – 2008.
Grote Chemistry Scholarships are named in honor of Dr. Irvine W. Grote, who served as head of the department from 1941 to 1964. Three $14,000 scholarships, $3500 annually for four years, are awarded to incoming freshmen. Previous Grote Scholars have graduated with distinction and gone on to success in chemical graduate schools, medical schools, law schools, pharmacy schools, and the chemical industry. In order to be eligible for a Grote Chemistry Scholarship, a student must: complete a course in high school chemistry with an A or B, attain a high school grade point average of 3.5 or above, have a composite score of 26 or above on the enhanced ACT exam or SAT equivalent, and declare chemistry as their major at UTC. This is UTC’s 30th year of awarding Grote Scholarships.
“Only three Grote scholarships are awarded annually to freshmen. These outstanding students then must maintain a 3.25 GPA both overall and in chemistry to retain the scholarship. We are very proud of all of these students and expect them to go on to success in graduate school, medical and dental schools, and other career paths,” said Dr. Gail M. Meyer, head of the Department of Chemistry.
