UTC engineering students placed 10th in design, 16th in maneuverability and 22nd in cost at the 2013 Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International competitions held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. There were 87 cars registered at the competition. See the results here.
Emily Stark, team leader, explained that this year’s vehicle was completely new. “Last year’s vehicle was heavy, which made it difficult to cross barriers,” she said.
The new design may have helped the team place 10th in the rock crawl portion of the competition.
In April, the UTC team scored a top ten finish at the Baja Society of SAE International competition at Tennessee Tech. Cornell, University of Michigan, and Rochester Institute of Technology also placed in the top ten schools.
UTC team members Amjad Abdullah, Matt Addison, Jared Baker, Justin Cartwright, Corey Cresswell, Casey Dillon, Chris Hawk, Maria Loza, Khannh Nguyen, Brandon Rodgers, and team leader Emily Stark are sponsored by Volkswagen, DENSO, Fox Racing, BS Solidworks and ALSTOM.
The team will race again June 6-9 at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York.
