For the first time in the history of the UTC Racing Mocs, the team placed first in the suspension and traction category during the 2013 Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International competition held at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

According to Emily Stark, student team leader, 90 teams competed in the event. UTC placed in the top 30 in maneuverability, acceleration, and the cost of building the vehicle.
College engineering students are encouraged to enter one of 12 different SAE Collegiate Design Competitions, “events that put classroom training into action by challenging students to design, build, and test the performance of a real vehicle in a competitive environment.”
In April 2013, the UTC team scored a top ten finish at the Baja SAE International competition at Tennessee Tech. Cornell, University of Michigan, and Rochester Institute of Technology also placed in the top ten schools.
At the 2013 Baja SAE International competition held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington in May, UTC engineering students placed 10th in design, 16th in maneuverability and 22nd in cost.

“The most important thing I feel this year’s team learned and the best piece of advice I could give next year’s team would be to test your design as early as possible so that you can learn from and improve upon your mistakes,” Stark explained.
