Peak performance: UTC criminal justice professor honored for innovation in teaching
UTC Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Katelyn Hancock has been named the recipient of the Ken Peak Innovations in Teaching Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). The Ken Peak Innovations in Teaching Award recognizes faculty members for innovative and effective teaching methods that enhance learning experiences and have the potential to be replicated by other educators.
UTC to host MLK Day commemorative brunch with Dr. Michael Williams and Elijah Cameron
The UTC Office of Multicultural Affairs, in partnership with Student and Family Engagement, will host a commemorative brunch to celebrate the 12th UTC MLK Day celebration, “Remembering the Past and Embracing the Future.” Panelists Dr. Michael Williams and Elijah Cameron will reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his lasting impact on the Chattanooga community at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, in the University Center Tennessee Room.

UTC is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a lineup of events, activities and educational programs. UTC’s first Latino fraternity, Lambda Theta Phi, will be receiving a proclamation presented by the city of Chattanooga’s Department of Equity & Community Engagement.

This year’s festivities, which take place from Sunday, Aug. 18, through Saturday, Aug. 24, are set to kick off with the Oak Street Roast—marking the beginning of a week chockful of opportunities for students to connect, explore and immerse themselves in the UTC community.

March is Women’s History Month, and the UTC Center for Women and Gender Equity will honor and celebrate women’s contributions to history. “This is just a great time to talk and highlight the historical context of what does it mean to be where we are today as women and how did we get here?” said Lauren Ouwerkerk, associate director of WaGE and the Prism Center.
Happy Anniversary: MCC, WaGE celebrate 15 years of providing UTC students a ‘sense of belonging’
For 15 years, the Multicultural Center and the Center for Women and Gender Equity have provided safe spaces for students at UTC. The organizations will jointly celebrate their 15th anniversaries with a reception from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, at Lupton Hall.
An ode to the arts: UTC Black History Month calendar features theatre, dance, art … and even yoga
UTC Black History Month 2024 kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 1, and this year’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” Among the event highlights is a three-night reenactment, “Baldwin vs. Buckley” as performed by the New York-based american vicarious theatre group.

The 11th UTC MLK Day celebration brought a pair of co-headliners to Chattanooga—Dr. Bernice A. King and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz. The event took place on Friday, Jan. 19, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium.
