UTC hosted GIS Day on Wednesday, Nov. 20, a worldwide day of celebration of the impactful work of GIS professionals and an opportunity to inspire future innovators. The day began with a cartography workshop hosted by the IGTLab. GIS Director Charlie Mix shared with students, faculty and community members the different types of maps and data classifications—as well as how to create effective maps to tell stories with data.

Each weekday around 3 p.m., parents and families from Chattanooga’s Oak Grove neighborhood gather outside East Side Elementary to pick up their children. What should be a safe and routine part of the day can actually be quite dangerous as cars speed through the residential area.

Transferring from Chattanooga State Community College to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga opened doors that Chance Rollins didn’t expect. “The scholarships worked out where I was getting paid to go to school,” Rollins said. “I loved it. When I came here, I could pay for the costs.”
Power C Tour makes its last stop at UTC
The third annual UTC Power C Tour returned home on Wednesday, Nov. 13, making its last stop at the UTC Aquatics and Recreation Center, where prospective students got the chance to learn about academic programs, admissions, housing, financial aid and campus life at UTC.
Leading with purpose: Dr. John Harbison’s commitment to service, learning and leadership
On Monday, Nov. 11, Dr. John Harbison will be the keynote speaker at UTC’s annual Veterans Day Luncheon, a celebration of the veterans and military-affiliated students, faculty and staff at the University. At the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year, approximately 1,160 veterans, military-affiliated students, spouses and dependents of veterans were enrolled at UTC.
ChattState to UTC: A transfer student’s path to success
Joshua Clay didn’t choose a traditional route to college, but for him, that was part of the plan. Clay, a junior accounting major at UTC, started his academic journey at Chattanooga State Community College, where he received two free years of education and graduated with an associate degree in accounting.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Challenger STEM Learning Center hosted its second-ever STEAMagination Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, an event designed for students in grades K-8 and their families.

For pre-health students at UTC, finding time for unpaid hospital shadowing or volunteer work while holding down a job can be a challenge. A new partnership between the UTC CPE and Erlanger Baroness Hospital is helping to eliminate that barrier.
Dr. Yvette Stewart to join UTC as literacy director
Dr. Yvette Stewart has been named assistant professor and literacy director for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s School of Education and the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Education. Stewart, who has worked for Hamilton County Schools since 2018, will begin her new role at UTC on Oct. 21.
