Student to present research at international scientific meeting
UTC student Carolyn Hoagland, selected as a Volkswagen Distinguished Scholar to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will present her research at the 2010 Annual Meeting and International Research Conference of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. This event will be held November 11-14 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
UTC shares in City of Chattanooga water abatement award
When the City of Chattanooga received the Outstanding Overflow Abatement Award by the Kentucky-Tennessee Water Environment Association, the University was also recognized. Before the Chattanooga City Council, Vice Chancellor Richard Brown received a plaque for the University’s role in the Warner Park/Engel Stadium Combined Sewer Overflow Control Project.
University awarded security grant
UTC was one of 18 institutions selected to receive a U.S. Department of Education Emergency Management for Higher Education (EMHE) grant worth nearly a half million dollars to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for emergency management. Across the United States, 327 institutions applied for the grant.
Campus will Focus on China with series of events
Dr. Bob Swansbrough, UTC Political Science Professor, recently returned from a Fulbright Scholar experience in China. Along with Ruth Grover, UTC Curator, Swansbrough has planned Focus on China, a month-long series of exhibitions, demonstrations and lectures.

Anthropology class participates in prehistoric demonstration
Dr. Lyn Miles’ anthropology students showed how humans made cave paintings with a spitting technique used by aborigines, developed language, culture and civilization, and modified their environment. This prehistoric demonstration occurred on Vine Street between the UTC University Center and Brock Hall.
UTC student crowned Mr. Tennessee 2010
UTC student Jamaal Strickland of Nashville was recently crowned Mr. Tennessee 2010 by former Mr. Tennessee D’Errico Wylie. Strickland earned a $1,500 scholarship for winning the competition, held recently at Tennessee State University. He is 22 years old.
Portrait unveiling of former dean of Lupton Library
A portrait of former Dean of the Lupton Library Dr. Joseph Jackson was recently unveiled on campus. Artist and UTC nursing alumna Elizabeth Adams was commissioned to paint Jackson’s portrait, which is currently on display in the T. Cartter and Margaret Rawlings Lupton Memorial Library.
