This year’s Homecoming theme: “Made in Chattanooga”

UTC students reflected in sculpture

UTC students may find themselves reflected in one of campus’s new works of art. “Three Shades of Green” is an eighteen foot tall sculpture placed across from Race Hooper Hall. It was decided to position the piece so that it overlooks green space and the new library. Jim Collins, former art professor at UTC, has created this sculpture with three powder-coated aluminum figures sitting 15 feet high, perched atop recycled fiber­glass turbine blades.

Chemistry student selected for internship, MIT program

JasLynn Murphy aspires to become a research chemist, perhaps with the National Institutes of Health or the Department of Defense or the Environmental Protection Agency. Her undergraduate research with Dr. Stefanie Whitson at UTC prepared her for a summer internship in Washington, D.C., at the National Science Foundation – Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at Georgetown University. She’s also been selected to attend a program at MIT, DOW-MIT ACCESS, designed “to introduce students to the exciting possibilities of graduate-level education in chemical engineering, materials science, and chemistry.”

Music and Theatre departments offer a variety of performances

If you’re looking to be blown away by a fabulous performance, look no further than the UTC campus! The Fine Arts Center on the corner of Palmetto and Vine houses the Roland Hayes Concert Hall and the Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre, two great spots to enjoy upcoming performances by the Department of Music and the Department of Theatre and Speech.

WUTC host announces national roller derby championships

Rabbit Zielke, feature news producer with WUTC, spends many of her weekends with ladies like Bipolar Bear, Shank Williams Jr., and Jenny Hate. These skaters are with the Chattanooga Roller Girls, and Zeilke is their announcer, as well as the announcer for four other local leagues. This year alone, Zeilke has called the action on forty-one roller derby games, known as bouts.

SGA President appointed to THEC

Robert Fisher, Student Government Association (SGA) President and a Brock Scholar, recently added yet another addition to his already lengthy lists of achievements. After a nearly unanimous nomination by the SGA executive board followed by a thorough interview process, Fisher was recently appointed to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) as the student representative of the University of Tennessee System.

Professor’s research affects highest level on Ukraine government

Dr. Irina Khmelko grew up under communist control in Kiev, Ukraine, and faced persecution just for sneaking to attend church. Khmelko is now assisting her native country in forming a more democratic government by partnering with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
