Five UTC communication majors have been recognized for their multimedia and journalism skills. UTC students Mason Edwards, Bethany Cothran and Cassandra Castillo, and recent May graduates Caroline Colvin and Maddie Charnes, took home top honors in all three student categories—Best Feature Story, Best News Coverage and Best Student Journalist—at the recent Golden Press Card Awards in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The first Spanish-English interpreting class at UTC, Spanish 4640 immerses students in the dynamic realm of interpreting—the art of bridging spoken messages between languages with split-second precision—as opposed to translating written text.

Senior Caroline Colvin, pursuing bachelor’s degrees in communication and Spanish, placed seventh in the highly competitive Hearst Journalism Awards Feature Writing Competition for her Rising Rock feature titled “The Road to the Medal.” Colvin, head editor of Rising Rock and editor-in-chief of the University Echo, is UTC’s first-ever winner in the Hearst Foundation writing competition.
