Math Kangaroo has young students hopping to UTC for competition
For young math minds, solving complex puzzles isn’t just a skill—it’s a challenge they embrace. On Thursday, March 20, students ranging from elementary school to high school arrived at Grote Hall to put their problem-solving skills to the test in the 2025 Math Kangaroo competition.
UTC’s Tatiana Allen honored as 2024 SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor
UC Foundation Professor of Physics Tatiana Allen has been named the 2023–24 Society of Physics Students (SPS) Outstanding Chapter Advisor for her leadership and guidance of the SPS chapter at UTC. The Outstanding Chapter Advisor—the highest honor given annually by the SPS—is bestowed to one advisor among approximately 850 chapters nationwide. The award recognizes exceptional leadership, student leadership development, and the support and encouragement an advisor provides to their chapter.
Physics in action: UTC student chapter recognized by national governing body
For the second year in a row, the UTC chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has earned national recognition for its achievements. Over winter break, the chapter learned that it had once again received the Outstanding Chapter Award from the SPS National Office, cementing its status as a top-tier student-led organization.
Math Kangaroo competition champions minds and numbers
For the first time since the pre-COVID days, the UTC campus was hopping with Math Kangaroo participants. On Thursday, March 21, over 100 students—from first graders to high school seniors—came to UTC’s Grote Hall to participate in Math Kangaroo, an international mathematics competition.

The UTC chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won an Outstanding Chapter Award from the SPS National Office, recognizing its excellence as a top-tier student-led organization. The designation is given to fewer than 10% of all SPS chapters at colleges and universities in the United States and internationally.
CUWiP trip nets recognition for UTC sophomore
At a recent conference for undergraduate women physics majors, sophomore Olivia Ziemer initially found herself in awe, as “I’ve never been in a room of that many women in STEM in my life, which was awesome.” She also awed the judges, returning to UTC with first prize in the poster competition.
