Several students and one faculty member broke out in dance that seemed to spontaneously occur outside the Tennessee Aquarium on Sunday, September 5th.
UTC dance instructor Monica Coulter and Lindsey Fussell, a teacher at the Center for Creative Arts, choreographed the event, acting on a suggestion of Chattanoogans Ann Coulter and Jim Kennedy.
They referenced dancers who brought a sense of fun to the Antwerp, Belgium, Central Station as they moved to the song “Do Re Mi” from the Sound of Music. The 2009 event became a viral sensation on YouTube.
After an initial meeting with Fussell, Allen Ledford and George Quick, Monica Coulter said the decision was made: the volunteer effort could work in Chattanooga. Three Sunday rehearsals (including a 7 a.m. call the morning of the event) were held at the Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts gymnasium where 140 dancers came together from UTC and schools in Cleveland, Dalton and Chattanooga.
“It was too much fun!” Coulter said. “The real success was getting that amount of people together. Everyone is asking us when the next one will be. Who knows—something might break out at the Chattanooga Market!”
