For the first time since the pre-COVID days, the UTC campus was hopping with Math Kangaroo participants. On Thursday, March 21, over 100 students—from first graders to high school seniors—came to UTC’s Grote Hall to participate in Math Kangaroo, an international mathematics competition.

On Friday, Feb. 23, a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga group—consisting of faculty, staff and student Jannat Saeed—visited the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Calculating the future with a double major in math and computer science
Why major in math? For Dahlen Elstran, a senior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, it’s pure passion. “I decided to major in math in 7th grade,” she said. “I realized that it was the only homework I enjoyed. So that was a sign.”
UTC connected to EPB Quantum Network℠ powered by Qubitekk
UTC has become the first academic institution to be connected to EPB Quantum Network℠ powered by Qubitekk. In late 2022, EPB and Qubitekk jointly launched the nation’s first industry-led, commercially available quantum network for running equipment and applications in an established fiber optic environment. UTC is connected to the network via a node within a quantum technology laboratory on campus.
Actuarial science major calculating risk for financial freedom, job security
Giselle Vincent is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics: Actuarial Science degree at UTC. Insurance and finance companies rely heavily on actuaries to forecast future events and provide solutions that drive economic and social decisions. It’s a well-paid field that combines deep analysis and real-world problem-solving.

The Birmingham, Alabama-based Tennessee STEM Explorers serve children throughout the Southeast by collaborating with local television stations to present weekly 30-minute STEM-driven programming.
STEAMagination festival inspires fun and learning at UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center
Families and children of all ages gathered at the UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center for the first-ever STEAMagination festival on Saturday, Oct. 21, a celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and math. The Challenger Center promotes career exploration for children, provides STEAM learning labs and simulated space missions and often hosts field trips and summer camps for K-12 students.

ANGELS summer camp at UTC inspired young women in STEM
The Agriculture and Nutrition for Girls while Encouraging Leadership (ANGELS) summer camp experience, held at UTC this summer, aimed to teach science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) lessons and empower young Black girls. With a focus on different themes each week, the ANGELS program fostered hands-on learning, leadership experience and creativity.
UTC chemistry grad’s research wins national recognition
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduate Dr. Caitlin Randolph is the winner of one of academia’s most prestigious and highly competitive fellowships for researchers within chemical sciences and instrumentation, and she attributes the win to UTC.
