On Thursday, May 4, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Engineering and Computer Science will open its second mechatronics laboratory—the Robotics, Intelligent Systems and Control Lab. The new lab will focus on two intertwined areas: Artificial intelligence and mobile mechatronics, also called mobile robots.
University announces launch of the UTC Research Institute
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is establishing the UTC Research Institute as a strategic initiative launched to pursue increased research funding, interdisciplinary collaboration across campus, and support for community and local industry priorities. The Research Institute will be led by Dr. Mina Sartipi, founding director of the UTC Center for Urban Informatics and Progress (CUIP) and Guerry Professor of Computer Science and Engineering.
Celebration: UTC to host five commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday
Spring commencement at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will be celebrated with five separate ceremonies over two days starting Friday, May 5. All ceremonies will take place inside McKenzie Arena. This will be the 261st overall commencement for the University.
Engineering students design musical fun for preschooler with disabilities
At the spring 2023 UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science Technology Symposium, students designed and built a table with musical instruments attached and just the right height for Benny, a 4-year-old preschooler at Soddy Elementary School with cerebral palsy.
Student dissects song lyrics to win Fly! Pitch Contest
Senior Sami Belcher’s idea caught the attention of judges who selected her poster-making business—Halfway Down Design Co.—as the winner of the recent Student Fly! Pitch Contest, held in the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Overcoming adversity: Mechatronics student Fatimah Musa won’t let visual impairment hold her back
UTC mechatronics student Fatimah Musa was born with cone-rod dystrophy—a type of inherited retinal degeneration affecting the retina’s photoreceptor cells. Musa said “visually impaired” is usually the correct term for her case, “but I generalize myself as blind because blind does include the visually impaired.”
Quantum science is soon to take its place on campus
Dr. Tian Li, an assistant professor of physics at UTC, was the featured speaker for a “Gig City Goes Quantum” presentation on April 21. Li and his fellow UTC researchers have a lot of ideas for experiments, he said, and quantum research capabilities hold great promise for students, too.
“It takes a lot of people to build these technologies,” quantum scientist says
Dr. James Troupe was asked how long it will take for quantum networking to come together. “I’ll give you an answer and then I’ll tell you the answer is probably moot,” said Troupe, chief scientist for quantum communications company Xairos and the guest speaker for the second of three “Gig City Goes Quantum” presentations hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Cleveland rocks: Dual admission agreement allows for smooth transfer from Cleveland State to UTC
On Tuesday, April 18, an updated dual admission agreement between the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Cleveland State Community College was formalized as part of a Power C Tour event in Cleveland State’s George L. Mathis Student Center. The Cleveland State to UTC agreement is designed to provide a seamless transition for students earning an associate degree at Cleveland State to continue their education and obtain a bachelor’s degree at UTC.
Research is pursuing quantum science’s “second revolution,” ORNL expert says
Scientists’ discovery of how quantum mechanics works is popularly described as the first “revolution” in the field. The second is still somewhere on the horizon but getting closer, according to Dr. Raphael Pooser, an Oak Ridge National Laboratory quantum physicist.
