UTC wants you: University recognized as a military-friendly institution
At the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year, approximately 600 veterans, military-affiliated students, spouses and dependents of veterans were enrolled at UTC, comprising more than 5% of the student population. “Our community is growing and getting stronger,” said UTC Veteran and Military Affairs Director Sylvana Matthews. “Military community often speaks word-of-mouth. They tell each other, they tell family, they tell their brothers and sisters, their next-of-kin. When they come to UTC and Chattanooga, they build a close-knit community here.”

UTC has been designated a military-friendly and military spouse-friendly school by Military Friendly®, a national veterans organization. UTC received gold-level 2024-2025 Military Friendly designation for the University’s efforts in creating sustainable and meaningful education paths for the military community.
Elementary excitement: Students dive into learning thanks to UTC-built augmented reality sandbox
Thanks to a partnership with the UTC Department of Electrical Engineering, students at Chattanooga’s Westview Elementary School were introduced to an augmented reality (AR) sandbox at its unveiling on Tuesday, March 26, during the school’s annual Family STEAM Night.

Chattanooga sets the pace for connected mobility and enhanced safety with $2M USDOT SMART grant
Pedestrian safety in Chattanooga is set to advance significantly thanks to a $2 million Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Earlier this month, officials from the City of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga were notified that they are among the 34 recipients of a SMART “Planning and Prototyping Grant” from a pool of 321 applicants nationwide.

Up, up and away: UTC student shares his NASA internship experience
Ever since he was little, Ian Tidwell has loved space. After high school, he decided that he wanted to go to space himself. When the opportunity to intern for NASA appeared in the spring of 2023, Tidwell, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, jumped at the chance. He traveled to the Johnson Space Center in Houston to work in field operations as part of a team creating screen displays for ground control.
