The fall semester is officially here, and the first few weeks of your college experience are crucial. Fortunately, UTC likes to make things fun and easy. Here are six things I wish I had known during my first semester at UTC:
UTC’s Olivia Reeves brings home the Olympic gold
On Friday, Aug. 9, Olivia Reeves—a senior sociology student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, became the first U.S. weightlifter to win gold at the Olympics in 24 years. She also set an Olympic record with a snatch of 117 kg (257.9 pounds).
From UTC to Italy: Journeying through literary heritage
The George C. Connor Professorship of American Literature and the UTC Department of English were co-sponsors of the fourth biennial John Dos Passos Conference, held May 23-25 in Bassano del Grappa, Italy.
Tim Gritten named dean of the UTC Library
Tim Gritten, who has spent the last six years as Executive Director of the Library and Special Collections at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, has been appointed Dean of the UTC Library. The appointment is effective July 1, 2024.
Students spread the love during I Love UTC Week festivities
From April 1-7, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga students, faculty, staff and alumni celebrated what sets the UTC campus apart from the rest during the annual I Love UTC Week celebration.
UTC mascot history exhibition gets Scrappy flyby
During “I Love UTC Week” from April 1-5, campus icon Scrappy flew by Special Collections and the display cases in the UTC Library’s Roth Grand Reading Room that Special Collections curates. The current exhibition, titled “‘Crowd-Energizing Mission’: A UTC Mascot Retrospective,” includes details and trivia sure to interest any Moc, and Scrappy was no exception. University Archivist Noah Lasley documented the event.
National Employee Appreciation Day
On National Employee Appreciation Day, which honors staff members for their accomplishments, hard work and devotion, Chancellor Steve Angle, members of the strategic leadership team and campus leaders sent a message to UTC faculty and staff.
UTC Special Collections wins federal grant to process Dr. Tommie Brown’s personal papers
A $144,049 grant has been awarded to University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Special Collections by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) to process the papers of Dr. Tommie Brown, a former UTC professor, department head and state legislator.
An ode to the arts: UTC Black History Month calendar features theatre, dance, art … and even yoga
UTC Black History Month 2024 kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 1, and this year’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” Among the event highlights is a three-night reenactment, “Baldwin vs. Buckley” as performed by the New York-based american vicarious theatre group.
UTC Library Special Collections adds Lookout Mountain conservation photographs
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga recently debuted the Lookout Mountain Civilian Conservation Corps photographs collection as a part of its Chattanooga History Collections archive. It includes 25 photographs of the environment and workers spanning between 1933 and 1939.
