From medicine to marketing, Billee Lassiter finds new career direction
For her first three years at UTC, Billee Lassiter was a biochemistry major. Her goal was a career as a gynecologist. In May 2022, she made a hard left turn into a degree that’s a far cry from medicine—marketing.

UTC STEM professor helps Hamilton County Schools master ‘computational thinking’
Dr. Stephanie Philipp, UTC assistant professor of education and interim director of the STEM Education Program, recently hosted 45 Hamilton County teachers—half of whom are UTC graduates, according to a show of hands. Philipp’s half-day cohort was funded as part of a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
For UTC sophomore, helping improve health in underserved communities is ‘what I want to do 110% deep in my soul’
Gillian Morton, a Brock Scholar in the Honors College majoring in pre-health professional exercise and health science with minors in biology and chemistry, was one of five UTC undergraduates to attend this summer’s HBCU Wellness Project at Meharry Medical College in Nashville.
Renowned baritone Jeremy Huw Williams to perform at UTC
Jeremy Huw Williams, a Welsh baritone opera singer who also is known for his work in contemporary classical music, will perform at the Cadek Recital Hall on the UTC campus on Tuesday, Sept. 19. The free concert, open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m.—and seating is limited. Free parking is available in the adjacent Lupton Hall parking garage; both the parking garage and Cadek Hall are handicap accessible.

Casey Edwards, a 2012 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a bachelor’s degree in music theory and composition, now composes music for video games.

This summer, Robert Lake Wilson Professor of Geology Jon Mies and Professor of Geology and Associate Department Head Amy Brock-Hon accompanied 12 UTC students to Scotland—considered the birthplace of modern geology.
Westbrook Scholarship: Helping UTC chemistry and physics students for 30 years
For 30 years, the Westbrook Scholarship Program has helped first-year chemistry and physics students at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga complete their degrees. The scholarship provides $14,000 over four years to eligible incoming freshmen in the UTC Department of Chemistry and Physics.

“My story is about American generosity and opportunity,” said UTC graduate Cap Nguyen, an honors student and an active Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers member while at UTC. “I believe that UTC took a chance on me and gave me a great opportunity. It provided me the skill set that changed my life outlook drastically.”
