Dottie McSpadden knew her arm was burned, but it didn’t feel that bad. At least not at first. A couple of hours later, though, she’d changed her mind. “Oh, it was a nine out of 10,” she said. “I have not felt pain like that.”
Promotion day: Inaugural Middle School to Moc Scholar program creates UTC pipeline
Between May 15-23, UTC dignitaries are participating in numerous Hamilton County Schools eighth-grade promotion events to introduce the Middle School to Moc Scholar program. A collaboration between UTC and Hamilton County Schools, Middle School to Moc Scholar will award every eighth-grade student a certificate of acceptance to UTC for fall 2027 enrollment—contingent upon successful completion of high school and meeting admission requirements for the University.

UTC professor, students helping Chattanooga Police decrease gun crimes
The Chattanooga Police Department began tracking gun crimes closely after violence skyrocketed in 2016. But a data-crunching partnership with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga created four years later shows marked decreases in gun-related crimes and could be preventing future crimes by taking guns off the street.

Dawn Callahan took the reigns as the division head of the French-American School of New York middle school in 2022, the same year she graduated from the School Leadership program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
French connection: Alum Sara Marc headed to France after acceptance into distinguished program
This fall, alum Sara Marc is headed to Bordeaux, France, to be a teaching assistant and U.S. cultural ambassador as part of the TAPIF program. She has been placed in the Académie de Bordeaux at the secondary school level (middle and/or high school).

University announces launch of the UTC Research Institute
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is establishing the UTC Research Institute as a strategic initiative launched to pursue increased research funding, interdisciplinary collaboration across campus, and support for community and local industry priorities. The Research Institute will be led by Dr. Mina Sartipi, founding director of the UTC Center for Urban Informatics and Progress (CUIP) and Guerry Professor of Computer Science and Engineering.
Celebration: UTC to host five commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday
Spring commencement at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will be celebrated with five separate ceremonies over two days starting Friday, May 5. All ceremonies will take place inside McKenzie Arena. This will be the 261st overall commencement for the University.
