For the ninth straight year, a team of SMILE Fund students emerged victorious in the CFA Institute Greater Tennessee Research Challenge. The SMILE Fund (Student Managed Investment Learning Experience) group of Gary W. Rollins College of Business undergraduates Justice Cardenas, Caden Christenson, Breonna Gandhi, Daniel Goodman and Kyle Leivas demonstrated financial acumen and research expertise in winning the CFA event held on Feb. 26 in Nashville.

“Economics and Etiquette” was organized by Dr. Claudia Kramer, the Scott L. Probasco Jr. Distinguished Chair of Free Enterprise, whose mission “is to study the American free enterprise system and the conditions under which it operates most efficiently, engage in high-level scholarly research and contribute to the public knowledge and understanding of economic theory and practice.”
UTC to celebrate 40th anniversary of Meacham Writers’ Workshop March 19-22
The 2025 Spring Meacham Writers’ Workshop, taking place March 19-22, is free and open to the public—with events held at various locations on the UTC campus and at Stove Works (1250 E. 13th St. in Chattanooga). Since its inception in 1985, the workshop has provided a platform for nationally known authors, local writers, students and novice writers to engage in an open exchange of ideas, works and readings.
Expansion of UTC’s Gary W. Rollins College of Business breaks ground
The current home of the Gary W. Rollins College of Business broke ground on an 81,000-square-foot expansion to Fletcher Hall on Monday, March 3. Located at the corner of McCallie Avenue and Douglas Street, the four-story addition will complement the existing building by connecting all four stories, expanding on the north side of the building facing away from McCallie Avenue.
Running on research: How UTC’s marathon project is shaping Chattanooga’s running community
As the sun set at the end of a snowy Wednesday, a group of runners made their way around the track at Girls Preparatory School. The group, made up of mostly UTC students along with a few faculty members and local residents, was part of the “Chattanooga Marathon Project” research initiative.
Summer blast: UTC’s Challenger STEM Learning Center relaunches summer camp
UTC’s Challenger STEM Learning Center is hosting day camps for children throughout the summer. Starting in June, rising second to sixth graders in the Challenger Exploration Camp will have the opportunity to participate in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) challenges, rocket launches and explorations of space and Earth.
Play ball! UTC Library Special Collections showcases rare Chattanooga Lookouts photo archive
With spring training baseball in full swing, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Library’s Special Collections has published a new digital collection documenting the early history of the Chattanooga Lookouts minor league baseball team. The collection, titled “Sandy Sandlin Chattanooga Lookouts Photographs,” contains photographs, memorabilia, papers, newspaper clippings and other materials documenting the Lookouts from 1912 to 1987—with the bulk dating from the 1930s to the 1960s.
