At a recent conference for undergraduate women physics majors, sophomore Olivia Ziemer initially found herself in awe, as “I’ve never been in a room of that many women in STEM in my life, which was awesome.” She also awed the judges, returning to UTC with first prize in the poster competition.
Change of leadership in Office of Research and Graduate School
Dr. Joanne Romagni, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Vice Chancellor for Research and dean of the Graduate School, has decided to leave that position and return to the faculty as a professor in the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science. This change will be effective Jan. 1, 2024, and Deputy Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mann will serve as UTC Vice Chancellor for Research for a period of two years starting Jan. 1.
Moments of wonder: Student biology projects combine research, knowledge, insights and creativity
Sixteen projects were on display on Dec. 4 as part of a collaboration between the animal physiology course taught by Professor Loren Hayes, the meiofaunal biodiversity course taught by Assistant Professor Francesca Leasi and the ant ecology course taught by UC Foundation Associate Professor DeAnna Beasley. The trio began the collaboration, called the Integrative Biology Research Symposium, in fall semester 2022.
UTC senior receives honor at her final undergraduate conference
Brock Scholar and elementary education major Rebekah Cahill, who will be graduating from UTC in December, placed second in the 2023 Sloane Prize for Undergraduate Research poster competition at the 58th annual National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) conference in Chicago. NCHC’s annual meeting is the second-largest all-discipline undergraduate research conference and the largest national gathering of honors educators, administrators and staff members.
Trip to North Carolina conference lands award for sophomore researcher
In late October, Zayda Dominick and 13 other UTC undergraduates, accompanied by faculty from the Department of Chemistry and Physics, had the opportunity to present the results of their research at the Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society—known as SERMACS—in Durham, North Carolina. Dominick, who presented research she began during her freshman year titled “Understanding how NtrZ affects NtrY in Caulobacter crescentus,” received an undergraduate poster award.
Research opportunity leads to recognition for UTC senior
A research study by UTC senior Breanna Evans titled “Environmental Factors that Contribute to College Students Concerning Sleep and Physical Activity,” earned honorable mention recognition at the annual Black Doctoral Network (BDN) conference in Atlanta.
Students live, work and learn on study abroad trip to Vietnam
A study abroad trip to Vietnam is planned for summer 2024 and is open to any UTC student, regardless of major. The trip is organized by the Gary W. Rollins College of Business, the Center for Global Education Study Abroad program and the Office for Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavor.

Opening inner doors: Bliss Murphy came out of her shell during a busy freshman year
Bliss Murphy’s freshman year, along with the usual load of classes, was filled to the brim. During the academic year, she was a member or involved with 18 different on-campus groups or organizations, including the Center for Women and Gender Equity, the Wildlife and Zoology Club, the Ecological Decisions for a Global Environment (EDGE), Healing Through Harmony music therapy group and Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavor (URaCE).
Three UTC undergraduate researchers selected for inaugural Harbaugh awards
The Dr. Jane Harbaugh Research Experience Award was established in 2021 to commemorate the career of Harbaugh, whose 43-year career made her one of the longest-serving faculty members and administrators at UTC.
