During the 2024 spring semester, a collaboration between the UTC pre-health advising program, Erlanger and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine – Chattanooga is providing a new opportunity for students to gain much-needed and hard-to-find job shadowing experience. From early February through late April, 76 UTC students spanning 11 majors are getting the opportunity to job shadow in the Erlanger Baroness Hospital Emergency Department, obtaining valuable experience watching emergency room doctors and other medical personnel in action.

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, seven UTC students had the chance to present their research at the Tennessee State Capitol as part of Posters at the Capitol—an event that brought together students from eight universities across Tennessee.
‘Full STEAM Ahead’ field trip brings Atlanta academy to UTC
On Friday, Feb. 16, UTC hosted nearly 330 middle and high school students from Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA) in Atlanta for a “Full STEAM Ahead” field trip.
Dr. Ethan Carver named interim dean of the UTC Graduate School
Dr. Ethan Carver has been appointed interim dean of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Graduate School. Carver has worked closely with graduate programs and the Graduate School since 2016, first as assistant dean and then as associate dean.
Love of the outdoors leads UTC alum to top job at outdoor nonprofit
Eliot Berz, executive director of the Tennessee River Gorge Trust, earned his master’s in environmental science at UTC in 2021. Founded in 1981, the Trust works to protect more than 17,000 acres in the River Gorge, which was carved through the Cumberland Mountains by the Tennessee River.
Marching Mocs travel to London for New Year’s Day parade
Ninety-two Marching Mocs band members will travel to London on Wednesday, Dec. 27, to participate in the London New Year’s Day Parade. The parade will be broadcast in the U.S. on PBS stations starting at 7 a.m. EST.
Change of leadership in Office of Research and Graduate School
Dr. Joanne Romagni, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Vice Chancellor for Research and dean of the Graduate School, has decided to leave that position and return to the faculty as a professor in the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science. This change will be effective Jan. 1, 2024, and Deputy Vice Chancellor Reinhold Mann will serve as UTC Vice Chancellor for Research for a period of two years starting Jan. 1.
Shot at a goal: UTC soccer star wants to become seventh doctor in her family
UTC graduating senior Mackenzie Smith aims to become the seventh physician in her immediate family, but medical school will have to wait until after her soccer career ends. Smith has her eye on playing professional soccer overseas. Then, the two-time all-Southern Conference player and biochemistry major plans to join her five siblings and father and attend medical school.
Moments of wonder: Student biology projects combine research, knowledge, insights and creativity
Sixteen projects were on display on Dec. 4 as part of a collaboration between the animal physiology course taught by Professor Loren Hayes, the meiofaunal biodiversity course taught by Assistant Professor Francesca Leasi and the ant ecology course taught by UC Foundation Associate Professor DeAnna Beasley. The trio began the collaboration, called the Integrative Biology Research Symposium, in fall semester 2022.
Combating the heat: UTC students recognized for their work
Last summer, four UTC students worked with Dr. Dawn Ford and the Hamilton County Health Department on a tabletop exercise to come up with ways to respond in the event of extreme heat. In one of their newsletters this fall, the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) discussed the work they did.
