It’s elementary: Taking science — and fun — off campus and into the community
Team from the School of Education wants to design “courses that work outside the classroom.”
No-frills journey: Students conduct research on remote island
On the Bahamian island of San Salvador, students conducted scientific experiments and mingled with the island’s residents.
UTC students build ropes course for Georgia elementary school
Students at Gilbert Elementary School in LaFayette, Ga., have a new way to have fun outside while building their problem-solving skills. This past spring, UTC students in the Outdoor Leadership Skills class, led by Dr. Drew Bailey, constructed a ropes course in a wooded area next to the school.
ThinkAchieve course offers experiential learning in San Salvador, Bahamas
Leah Keith-Houle’s Red Bank High School students are learning to map with a purpose. Unlike most mappers who are white males between 30-45 years old, Keith-Houle’s students are often young black women and men who are 16 years old. They tested their skills when they formed a Humanitarian Outreach Team (HOT) for OpenStreetMap (OSM). With this open source program, they’ve mapped Padang, Indonesia, for tsunami preparedness and Washington, Illinois, for tornado first responders.
ThinkAchieve project leads to departmental honors thesis
Hannah and Sophia Seage, twins who are both French majors and Education minors, didn’t know what they were getting into when they volunteered for the ThinkAchieve project to help teach French to children at Rivermont Elementary School in Hixson, TN in 2012. They thought that they would just go to classes and assist in French lessons, but the experience grew, eventually culminating in their Departmental Honors Theses.
Chancellor Angle delivers State of the University Address on March 5, 2014
UTC Chancellor Steven R. Angle will deliver “Achieving Excellence—Charting the path to the future” to the community on Wednesday, March 5 at 8 a.m. at the Hunter Museum of American Art.
The right Angle: Chancellor targets student success and community connections
Before he even had a desk on campus, Chancellor Steven Angle hired a new provost, a new athletics director, and two head basketball coaches—and he hasn’t slowed down since.
Experiential learning increases student success
Eleven UTC students in the upper level cross-disciplinary course Tropical Island Ecology and Geology conducted research in San Salvador last summer, where they examined coral and algae living on natural reefs and compared them to those living on artificial reefs, such as sunken ships. Dr. Ann Holmes, Assistant Professor of Geology, and Dawn Ford, Adjunct Professor in Biological and Environmental Sciences, added a new layer of learning for these students by earning the designation of the pilot ThinkAchieve Experiential Learning class.
