UTC has become the first academic institution to be connected to EPB Quantum Network℠ powered by Qubitekk. In late 2022, EPB and Qubitekk jointly launched the nation’s first industry-led, commercially available quantum network for running equipment and applications in an established fiber optic environment. UTC is connected to the network via a node within a quantum technology laboratory on campus.
IGTLab at UTC is part of $6 million project to improve Chattanooga’s urban forests
A map developed by the Interdisciplinary Geospatial Technology (IGT) Lab at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was key in the city’s landing of a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to grow and maintain urban forests, greenspaces and waterways in Chattanooga’s disadvantaged communities.

UTC GIS Director Charlie Mix won a Cartography Special Interest Group Excellence Award for “A 21st Century Park System for Chattanooga, Tennessee” at the 2023 Esri User Conference—one of two awards won by the UTC IGTLab.

Described by insiders as a hidden gem, the UTC Interdisciplinary Geospatial Technology Lab was created in 1995 to provide learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in Geographic Information Systems. In layman’s terms, GIS marries data to maps to help understand the world in new ways.
