As Kamila Macedo began working in a law office during her sophomore year of college, she became immensely interested in the legal field. A Brazillian native, she graduated from college and law school in Brazil—and began working as a full-time lawyer! Later, Kamila decided to move to the United States and become a paralegal in order to restart her legal career in a new country. She enrolled in UTC’s Paralegal Certificate course and is not only building a career but also confidence.
Marah: What made you decide to take the Paralegal Certificate course?
Kamila: I knew that I wanted to continue to practice law in the USA and needed a practical way to restart my legal career. The paralegal course was a good way to begin that process. I found the course to be challenging in that it was 100% in English (which is my second language). However, I managed to finish the course with good grades, and I am proud of myself for doing so!
M: Why did you choose UTC for your course?
K: I researched many different online course options, but UTC’s course stuck out to me because I live in Chattanooga. I know many people who graduated from UTC and felt that they received a quality education. Based on that knowledge, I was happy and confident in my decision to enroll in the course.
M: What did you enjoy most about the course?
K: The material was great, and the professor was splendid. I specifically enjoyed learning about legislation. The foundation of what we learned about legislation was the same as what I learned in Brazil, but the minor details were different because of the different cultures. I found that to be interesting.
M: How did the course prepare you for your future endeavors?
K: As I pursue my American law career, I feel that the course gave me a solid introduction to the American legal world. I have a knowledge base now, which has increased my confidence tremendously.
M: How do you feel the quality of the curriculum was?
K: For me, I found the course to be a “happy medium.” It wasn’t too easy or too hard. The biggest challenge for me was doing it in my second language, but I felt the course content itself was appropriate and balanced.
M: What advice would you give to someone who is considering taking the course?
K: The course is an incredible experience. Give it your all and you will get a lot out of it! And, once you complete the course, never stop studying. There is always something new to learn in the legal field.
M: Is there anything else you would like to share about your Paralegal Certificate course experience?
K: If you have any interest in the legal field, you should definitely take the course. You learn a lot and are able to learn it quickly. I don’t think there is a better deal out there!
