Three Miss Black Tennessee USA 2013 contestants with UTC ties
By Megan Davis, University Relations Intern This year not one, but three titleholders who will compete this December in the Miss Black Tennessee USA pageant have ties to UTC. This means UTC holds the distinction of having the most representation from a college or university this year.
Update: Chancellor honors alumna, Miss Tennessee
UTC Chancellor Roger Brown presented UTC alumna and Miss Tennessee Chandler Lawson with a citation “for embodying UTC’s spirit of achievement with her competition and victory in the 2012 Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant and by serving as an advocate for children in Tennessee and beyond.”
Alumnus honored with Shulimson Founder’s Award
CCCE at UTC honors a Legislative Aide for US Senator Bob Corker, with the Gail Shulimson Founder’s Award. Alumnus John Goetz is the second recipient of the award, named in honor of the woman who established what would become the CCCE, a non-profit career and educational training center.
Special Collections displays mementos from Berlin Summer Olympics
In anticipation of this summer’s Olympic Games, the Special Collections of the UTC Lupton Library is exhibiting books, photographs, and mementos from the Berlin Olympics of 1936.
Alumnus wins Obie award, off-Broadway’s highest honor
Ben Williams, a UTC alumnus, won a 2012 Obie award for Sound Design in the play, “The Select (The Sun Also Rises).” The Obie Awards are annual awards given to theatre artists and groups in New York City. They are said to be “Off-Broadway’s highest honor.”
University alumni board welcomes new members
The chancellor hosted the year-end alumni picnic for the University’s Alumni Board. The picnic honors the service of the board’s members and recognizes the outgoing and new board members.
UTC graduate student crowned Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee
She’s won the state crown and she’s looking forward to a national competition—meet Jean-Marie Lawrence, UTC alumna (’11, Political Science: Legal Studies), UTC graduate student, and the new Ms. Wheelchair Tennessee 2012. Lawrence is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Administration: Local Government.
